we're bringing cables back, baby!

Welcome to our little cables corner of the interwebs. Together we’re bringing cables back!

Lately, I’ve been pining for the days of not-so-long-ago yore when gorgeous, complex cable knits were splashed all over Ravelry’s HRN page. A time when we all charged ahead inspired by wearable works of art, learning and growing as knitters, and mastering pieced construction with tubular cast ons and bind offs.

This golden era of cable knitting inspired me to become a knitwear design focusing on heritage-inspired cable knits meant to stand the test of time and trend. Knits that will never go out of style and coveted — if not outright “borrowed” — by family and friends.

At meggospurls, you’ll never find a top-down cable knit design. It’s just not how I roll. Wrangling an unwieldy sweater octopus WIP isn’t my idea of a good time, nor is it best practices for cable knits. Cables aren’t just beautiful, but also heavier than standard fabric, which is why they are so warm and snuggly, but they need the structure and stability of seams to keep your sweater from stretching out over time.

Get on-board with TEAM SEAM, where we revel in pieced construction, making critical adjustments and tweaks easy without the added horror of having to rip out huge chunks of a WIP sweater. It also, beneficially, makes traveling with knitting much easier than attempting to stuff an entire sweater inside a wee project bag.

While I might be throwing top-down and/or seamless knitting under the bus, there are times when it is the best practice, for example, with circular yoke sweaters. There are also amazing knitwear designers who make beautiful top-down cable knits with clever construction techniques that mimic traditional seams, but that still leaves the problem of making adjustments on a sleeve cap or the depth of a yoke long after you’ve bound off and realized that 50% of you sweater has to be frogged. For me it’s just not worth the risk, but I respect that everyone has different preferences for knitting. This is supposed to be fun, so knit in a way that gives you joy!

If the sound of heritage-inspired cable knits with creative designs, modern silhouettes, and well-written patterns is appealing to you you’ve come to the right spot. We’re in this cables journey together!
